Bryn Mawr, meaning "big hill" in Welsh, traces its name to an estate near Dolgellau, Wales, owned by Rowland Ellis, a Welsh Quaker who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686 to escape religious persecution. Originally called Humphreysville after the early settlers of the Humphreys family, the area was transformed with the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line in 1869. Railroad agent William H. Wilson renamed the community Bryn Mawr after acquiring 283 acres for the railroad, establishing it as a key stop at Milepost 8.5.
The Bryn Mawr Hotel, built in 1872 to attract visitors, became a landmark of the community. However, the Bryn Mawr ZIP code (19010) encompasses a broader area, including parts of Rosemont, Radnor Township, and Haverford Township, creating a larger sense of community. Situated along the Main Line—a string of affluent suburbs stretching from Philadelphia to Malvern—Bryn Mawr is surrounded by picturesque towns like Ardmore, Wynnewood, Narberth, Bala Cynwyd, and Villanova. The CDP had 1,404 households, with 13.5% including children under 18, 26.8% being married couples, and 41.1% consisting of individuals. The median household income was $47,721, though the broader Bryn Mawr ZIP code area reported a median family income of $110,956, reflecting the Main Line’s affluence. The median age of 22 highlights the influence of the student population, while 10.5% of residents are 65 or older, creating a dynamic mix of young adults, families, and retirees.
