Saint Cyril of Alexandria Church, opened in June 1928, has been a cornerstone of the community, though it merged with St. Philomena Church in Lansdowne in 2013. The story of St. Cyril’s is one of resilience, highlighted by the “Miracle at St. Cyril” in 2005, when community efforts, spurred by a child with cystic fibrosis, raised $200,000 to keep the associated elementary school open. Although the school eventually merged with St. Philomena in 2021, its buildings were repurposed by Vision Academy Charter School, continuing the borough’s commitment to education.
East Lansdowne’s population of 2,714 (2020 census) is notably diverse, with 66.0% African American, 16.6% White, 7.4% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 4.8% from other races, and 4.8% from two or more races, with 6.3% identifying as Hispanic or Latino. This diversity has grown over time, with the 2000 census showing 71.2% White and 26.8% African American, compared to 30.5% White and 55.8% African American in 2010. The borough’s population density is 13,100.6 inhabitants per square mile, reflecting its tightly knit residential areas.
With 931 households and 644 families, East Lansdowne has a strong family-oriented community, with 32.8% of households having children under 18 and 45.6% being married couples. The median age is 37, with 25.8% of residents under 18, 31.7% aged 25–44, and 14.0% over 65. The median household income is $44,205, with a family median of $53,021, and the per capita income is $19,558. While 6.2% of families and 7.6% of the population are below the poverty line, the borough maintains a resilient and supportive community atmosphere.
East Lansdowne is served by the William Penn School District, established in 1972, which includes East Lansdowne Basics Magnet Elementary School (K-6) and Vision Academy Charter School (K-8). Middle school students attend Penn Wood Middle School in Darby, while high school students are split between Penn Wood High School’s Cypress Street Campus (9-10) in Yeadon and Green Ave Campus (11-12) in Lansdowne. The East Lansdowne Elementary School’s library, opened to the public in 1972, reflects the borough’s commitment to community access, especially notable given the absence of a separate public library.
