Narberth’s history began in 1682 when Edward Rees, a Welsh settler, was deeded the land that would later become the borough. The area, initially part of a 100-acre farm owned by Edward R. Price, was founded as Elm in 1881 as a Quaker-friendly town. Renamed Narberth in 1893 and incorporated in 1895, the borough celebrated its centennial in 1995 with a year-long celebration. As of the 2010 census, Narberth’s population of 4,282 was 90.4% White, 1.9% Black or African American, 4.4% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 2.7% two or more races, with 2.4% identifying as Hispanic or Latino. The borough had 1,904 households, with 26.3% including children under 18, 44.9% being married couples, and 37.2% consisting of individuals. The median age was 39.6, reflecting a balanced community of families, professionals, and retirees. In 2021, the median household income was an estimated $133,475, with a per capita income of $35,165, indicating a prosperous community with only 2.6% of families below the poverty line.
